Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga National Park's history began in 1905 with the creation of the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest to protect the one-horned rhinoceros, following a visit by Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy of India, who sought protection for the endangered species. In 1908, it was designated a Reserve Forest, followed by becoming a Game Sanctuary in 1916, then a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950. The area was declared a National Park in 1974, and in 2006, it was recognized as a Tiger Reserve. Kaziranga was also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its unique natural environment and significant rhino population.
